Two drones shot down right above the Kremlin during an alleged Ukrainian attempt to assassinate Putin

Two drones were shot down outside of the Kremlin in Moscow, and the Russian government claimed they were sent by Ukraine in an attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. This is the most serious allegation that Moscow has leveled at Kyiv since the beginning of Russia's special military operation over 14 months ago. An attack on the Kremlin, the very seat of the Russian government, would be a dramatic escalation of the conflict. Before any official announcements, videos began circulating on Russian Telegram channels showing a video of flying objects approaching the dome of the Russian Senate building within the Kremlin grounds. The first of two attacks, occurring at around 2:27 a.m. local time, showed a drone being destroyed with little more than a puff of smoke. The second attack, occurring at around 2:43 a.m., showed a drone exploding mid-air and leaving a blazing wreckage on the dome. "Two uncrewed aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin," said Putin's office in a statement. "As a result of timely actions taken by the military and special services with the use of radar warfare systems, the devices were put out of action." The disabling of the two attacking drones caused the explosion of at least one, as seen in the video, sending debris crashing onto the Kremlin's grounds. The attack did not harm any people or cause significant material damages. Putin's office said Russia reserved the right to retaliate for what it described as an act of terrorism. "We regard these actions as a planned terrorist act and an attempt on the president's life, carried out on the eve of Victory Day, the May 9 Parade, at which the presence of foreign guests is also planned," read the statement. "The Russian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit." Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov added that Putin was not in the Kremlin at the time of the attack. Leah and Michelle Svensson of the show "Resistance Chicks" commented that Russia could also use this as an opportunity to blame the West and the United States for their military support of Ukraine. "It will be interesting to see whether Russia points the finger at the United States and the West for [their] longtime intelligence support to Kyiv," commented Leah. "We don't know where the drones came from. We don't know who was flying them. We don't know a lot of details behind this," commented Michelle. "But I can say this, that if these suspected countries are behind this, we should be up in arms. Because if Putin actually ever does retaliate the way that he could, God help us all."

Ukraine denies it tried to assassinate Putin

The Ukrainian government has denied Russian claims of an assassination attempt against Putin, with President Volodymyr Zelensky bizarrely claiming that Ukraine does not conduct actions outside of its claimed territory. "We are not attacking Putin or Moscow," he said while at a news conference in Helsinki, Finland, during a meeting with the prime ministers of four Nordic nations. "We are fighting on our own territory, defending our villages and cities," he added. "We do not have enough weapons, even for this. That is why we do not use them elsewhere. We have a deficit. We cannot use everything and everywhere… We leave it to the tribunal." Head of Ukraine's Office of the President Mykhailo Podolyak also denied his nation's involvement in the attack, claiming that the drone attacks were likely "guerrilla activities" caused by "local resistance forces" who purchased drones on their own. "As you know, drones can be bought at any military store," he said. Podolyak also parroted his president's baseless claim that Ukraine only conducts military activities within its territory in a defensive manner "and does not attack targets on the territory of the Russian Federation." Podolyak added that reports of an attack on the Kremlin, along with the alleged large-scale detention of Ukrainian saboteurs in Crimea, which Russia claims as its territory and has occupied since 2014, "clearly indicate the preparation of a large-scale terrorist provocation by Russia in the coming days."
