The mayor of a Muslim-majority city in the state of Michigan
has formally endorsed former President Donald Trump as his pick for the next chief executive.
Hamtramck, Michigan Mayor Ameer Ghalib issued his endorsement of Trump on Sept. 22 through a Facebook post. According to
100 Percent Fed Up, the Arab-American mayor was elected in 2021 with 68 percent of the votes cast for him.
"Trump and I may not agree on everything, but I know he is a man of principles. I believe he is the right choice for this critical time. I'll not regret my decision no matter what the outcome would be, and I'm ready to face the consequences," Ghalib wrote.
"For this and for many other reasons, I announce my support and endorsement for the former – and hopefully – the next president of the U.S., Donald Trump. Now, let the caravan begin its journey. This is just the starting point."
Days before the Yemeni-born Hamtramck mayor posted his endorsement, the
Detroit Free Press reported that
he met with the former president shortly before Trump's town hall in Flint, Michigan. Ghalib described the 20-minute meeting as "productive" to the outlet, and disclosed that the former president asked for his endorsement – which the mayor did through his Sept. 22 Facebook post.
"[Trump] knew a lot about me prior to the meeting. We talked about various topics including the debates, the polls updates, the statistics of votes in Michigan and Wayne County, the Arab American concerns and the Yemeni Americans in particular," he said. Ghalib continued that before he and Trump parted ways, he handed the former president "an official letter with some details about our concerns and to invite him to come to Hamtramck if possible."
The
Free Press continued that "Ghalib appeared to receive a positive response from Arab Americans to his meeting with Trump." It also pointed out that Ghalib and all six members of the Hamtramck City Council are Muslims. (Related:

Why Ghalib's endorsement of Trump matters
"Hamtramck has the second highest percentage of Arab American residents in Michigan after Dearborn, and also [has] a growing Bangladeshi American population," the outlet continued. "Michigan, which has the highest percentage of residents with Middle Eastern ancestry among all states in the U.S., is seen as a swing state."
A separate piece on
County Local News meanwhile expounded on why Ghalib endorsing Trump matters. First, his endorsement of the real estate mogul "challenges the notion that all Arab Americans are staunch Democrats" and "showcases the diversity of opinions within the Arab-American community." Second, "Ghalib's endorsement could potentially sway other Democrats to reconsider their stance on Trump."
The piece also pointed out that it took a huge amount of courage for Ghalib to endorse Trump, given that he hails from Wayne County – a Democratic stronghold. "His endorsement of Trump goes against the grain of his constituents and could have far-reaching implications for his political career," it added, with the mayor acknowledging this consequence.
"The Democratic Party has been quick to distance itself from Ghalib's endorsement of Trump. Party leaders have emphasized that his views do not reflect the values of the party as a whole. Many Democrats view Ghalib's endorsement as
a betrayal of the party and its core principles."
Despite condemnation from the Democrats, the Hamtramck mayor's move
received much acclaim from Republicans.
"Today is a good day in America," political activist Hassan Aoun told the
Free Press of Ghalib's announcement. "An Arab American mayor endorses Donald Trump."
Dearborn resident Khalil Othman, a former Democrat who jumped to the GOP for his opposition to LGBT books in libraries, also praised the Hamtramck mayor. "Thank you for changing the perception that all Muslim Americans are default tickers to (the) Democratic party," he said.
