Emergency food storage: Preparing for calorie shortages
By hrseditor // 2024-10-04

Preppers work hard to prepare for different daily challenges and survival scenarios. One way you can prep before SHTF is to stock up on foods high in calories to prevent a calorie shortage. Before things go south, stock up on essential food supplies like beans, grains and freeze-dried vegetables. (h/t to TheProvidentPrepper.org) Store your food supply in a room that is cool, dark and dry. Ideal storage conditions can help extend the shelf-life of these foods and give you a usable storage life of at least 25-30 years.

Beans

Beans contain protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber. They are considered a powerhouse of nutrients. When beans are combined with a grain, they provide your body with all the essential amino acids and form a complete protein. Store a variety of beans so you have a variety of ingredients when SHTF. Here are different kinds of beans to stock up on:
  • Black beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Kidney beans
  • Lentils
  • Navy beans (white beans)
  • Peas
  • Pinto beans

Dehydrated or freeze-dried vegetables

When buying supplies for your stockpile, make sure you get a variety of dehydrated or freeze-dried vegetables. Use these ingredients to make soups and broths after SHTF. Compared to freeze-dried food, you get almost three times as much dehydrated food in a can. However, dehydrated food tends to shrink dramatically during the dying process. Freeze-dried foods maintain much of their original size.

Grains

Grains are a great way to provide foundational nutrients and calories to your survival diet and including a variety of grains will diversify the nutrients in your diet. Many grains can be soaked, cooked and eaten without grinding into flour. If you have a grain mill, you can use grains to bake different items like bread and tortillas.
