Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey boasts meeting with CCP diplomat
- Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey met with CCP Consul General Chen Li, praising economic collaboration with China and highlighting Massachusetts' $7.2 billion trade relationship.
- The meeting reflects a broader pattern of Chinese officials cultivating relationships with American politicians, including Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer and Gov. Kathy Hochul, to advance CCP interests.
- Former Consul General Huang Ping was linked to a federal case involving Kathy Hochul's ex-aide, Linda Sun, who allegedly suppressed criticism of China's Uyghur persecution and shaped policies favoring the CCP.
- Experts like Helen Raleigh warn that financial ties to China make American officials and businesses less likely to challenge CCP policies, including human rights abuses or forced technology transfers.
- Hudson Institute's Michael Sobolik cautions that the CCP actively seeks to penetrate U.S. institutions, urging vigilance against enabling its influence campaigns.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and his immigration policies, has
boasted meeting Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Consul General Chen Li on May 8 in New York.
"Massachusetts is home to a vibrant Chinese-American community,
and China is one of our largest trading partners," Healey posted on X. "Glad to welcome Ambassador H.E. Chen Li of the People's Republic to China to the State House, and grateful for the opportunity to discuss future collaboration!"
The post included three photos – one of which featured former Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao, an American-born official whose parents emigrated from China. Hao recently stepped down from her role but remains an unpaid advisor in the administration of Healey.
A press release from the office of Healey emphasized the economic ties of Massachusetts with China, noting that the communist regime is the third-largest trading partner of the state, with $7.2 billion in goods exchanged in 2024. The governor defended the meeting by stating she prioritizes engagements with foreign officials, citing past meetings with diplomats from the Netherlands and Singapore. (Related:

"China is Massachusetts' third-largest trading partner, with over $7.2 billion worth of goods exchanged in 2024. In 2024, Massachusetts imported $3.4 billion in goods from China, including toys, games and sports equipment, apparel and accessories," the press release read. "Massachusetts exported $3.8 billion in goods to China in 2024, including industrial machinery, medical devices and plastics.
Chinese officials are cultivating relationships with American politicians to penetrate U.S. and their businesses
Fox News Digital has reported extensively on the Chinese Consulate's outreach to Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
For instance, earlier this year, Chen participated in multiple New York City parades, including events featuring Schumer and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a vocal critic of Trump. Additionally, Chen met with the brother-in-law of Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to coordinate the Empire State Building's lighting ceremony for the Lunar New Year – a decade-long tradition between the Chinese Consulate and the iconic landmark.
Before Chen assumed his role, the position was held by Huang Ping, a controversial diplomat who served from 2018 to 2024. Huang was linked to a federal case involving Linda Sun, former deputy chief of staff to Hochul. A Justice Department press release revealed that Sun was indicted for acting as an unregistered foreign agent, visa fraud, alien smuggling and money laundering conspiracy.
The indictment alleged that Hochul initially sought to address the persecution of Uyghur Muslims in China in her 2021 Lunar New Year message but was overruled by Sun, who reportedly opposed the inclusion due to her pro-CCP stance.
Sun allegedly admitted to losing her temper with the speechwriter and later informed Chinese official Huang Ping of the situation, ensuring the omission of the Uyghur issue. The indictment further claims that
Sun assisted in shaping New York State policies in favor of China's interests, with Huang Ping reciprocating by sending her parents Nanjing-style salted ducks prepared by his chef as a gesture of gratitude.
In line with all this, Michael Sobolik, an expert on U.S.-China relations and a Hudson Institute senior fellow commented: "[The CCP] is always looking for ways to penetrate U.S. businesses and civil society. We shouldn't make their job easier for them."
